Access for All Abilities – Lasher BT Wheelchair Launch

People and Parks Foundation are proud supporters of Parks Victoria’s All Abilities Access program. The Foundation believes that Victoria’s wonderful National Parks should be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical ability. To this end, the Foundation has provided funding for world-class, innovative equipment that enables people with restricted mobility to access wilderness areas in a direct and meaningful way.

The very special wheelchair that People and Parks have proudly funded is called the Lasher BT Beach Chair. This will be the first beach wheelchair that Parks Victoria has provided in parks that enables visitors with disabilities or mobility limitations to access beaches independently. Due to its clever design and being built with very lightweight materials, visitors can self propel this wheelchair on sandy trail surfaces and on the beach. This wheelchair is well suited for a range of abilities but is particularly well suited for visitors with paraplegia who are accustomed to operating manual wheelchairs independently.

This chair was selected in consultation with the disability community  and was trialed at Tidal River earlier this year by the Leisure Specialist at the Victorian Spinal Cord Service, Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre.

Help us continue to strive for universal access to our wonderful national parks by donating today. Every donation brings us closer to parks access for everyone, making the nature connection regardless of physical mobility.
